Ladakh or Little Tibet is a beautiful desert region, high in the western Himalayan plateau. Culturally and geographically very close to Tibet, the Ladakhi kings had for centuries been subservient to the more powerful Tibetan rulers to the east. Though it is place of few resources and an extreme climate, the Buddhist Ladakhis, with their traditions of frugality and their intimate knowledge of the local environment, have not only survived but actually prospered. The Ladakhi people have endured centuries of invasions from the Mongols of central Asia, the Baltis from Baltistan that lies to the west, the Dogras from the south and occasionally, even the Tibetans from the east. Leh, the main town of Ladakh was for centuries at the centre of the trade in fine pashmina wool, once worth its weight in gold. Heavily laden yak and pony caravans brought in pashmina from Tibet, turquoise, coral and silver from Yarkand and Kashgar in central Asia, spices and fabrics from India and silk from Kashmir. The Yarkandi and Kashmiri merchants of Leh were renowned for their immense wealth.

Day 1 DELHI - LEH, Ladakh (LD)
Fly to Leh (11300ft) and rest of the morning at leisure
to acclimatize to the altitude. Late afternoon visit
Shankar Gompa and Tsemo. GRAND DRAGON
Day 2 LEH (BLD)
Day excursion to Shey, Thiksey and Hemis.
Day 3 LEH - LAMAYURU - ALCHI (BLD)
Today we drive to Alchi (10650ft) visit en route Lamayuru monastery (11350ft). ALCHI RESORT.
Day 4 ALCHI - LEH (BLD)
Morning visit Alchi Gompa. Later drive back to Leh visit
en route Spituk and Phyang monastery. GRAND DRAGON

Day 5  LEH - KHARDUNG LA - SUMOOR (Nubra valley) (BLD)
Today we drive to Sumoor (Nubra valley) passing Khardung La (18390ft), the highest motorable road in the world. Excursion to Ansa Gompa (Monastery) and Panamik Hot Springs. Later drive back to Sumoor visiting en route Tri-Tso a small lake in between a hill.
TIRIT CAMP
Day 6 SUMOOR - DIKSIT - HUNDER - SUMOOR (BLD)
Tour of the Diksit Monastery which also the main village or headquarters of Nubra Valley. Later enjoy a ride on a bacterian camel (double humped) in Hunder amidst the sand dunes of this high altitude desert. Later we will visit Samstanling Gompa founded by Lama Tsultims Nima.
Day 7 SUMOOR - LEH (BLD)
Today we drive back to Leh with rest of the day
at leisure.

Fly to Delhi and connect homebound flights. |
